A24 needs to be careful or else they're going to become a parody of themselves... a mere caricature of something that was once unique and humble, like Wes Anderson.
Anyway, say what you will about these slow burn, dramatic, allegorical horror films... I generally tend to enjoy them. Big fan of Hereditary, The VVich, etc.
Not only is "Men" backed by a film company known for quality output but the director of this film is Alex Garland who made 2 amazing films already, "Ex Machina" and "Annihilation." So I was pretty hyped to see this.
It's not for everyone, that's clear. It's slow, it's quiet and it's confusing if you don't see the bigger picture.
And here's the bigger picture: the manipulative actions of one man weave their way into the mind of a woman who then sees these traits repeat themselves in all other men.
It's about perceived guilt. It's about feeling like you did the wrong thing even though you were just trying to protect yourself.
It's about being a woman in a world filled with men.
These messages are brilliantly executed in this film and because of it's emphasis on subtext, it might come across as weird for weirdness' sake to some.
But it's not afraid to get weird too.
There are some truly horrifying scenes in this... namely the birthing scene... which will take residence in your mind long after witnessing it.
8/10
