"Candyman (2021)" This film is not going to be for everyone. If you want a straight slasher, you might be disappointed. This film utilizes the backdrop of the supernatural Candyman legend to tell a story of systemic discrimination. I feel like the subject matter is handled well in the hands of writer/director Nia DaCosta along with co-writer Jordan Peele who is no stranger to writing allegorical horror scripts. Acting is on point, especially loved the performance from Nathan Stewart-Jarret. The shots are stunning from the disorienting opening upside-down skyscraper shots to the gorgeous kill scene of the art critic. While I mostly have good things to say about this movie, I feel like it does drag at times and is overall too darkly lit and those two components for me tend to equal heavy eyelids followed by some light snoozin'. 7/10
